Archaeological collection of Acharnes

The foundation of an Archaeological Museum in Acharnes occupied the mind of citizens of Acharnes for many years. From 1982 to 1999 a small archaeological collection was accommodated in the ground floor of Folklore Museum of Acharnes in the central square. In 2006 the collection, dueto the earthquake which made the building unsuitable, but mostly due to the increase of discoveries which came from the saving excavations in the big public works (Olympic Village, Attica Road and in the Railway Centre of Acharnes), was moved in a bigger building, rented by the Municipality of Acharnes, next to the Mycenaean Vaulted Tomb. In the exhibition, which was organised by the archaeologist of 2nd Ephorate of Pre-historical and Classical Antiquities Maria Platonos and her collaborators, was given emphasis so in the scientific presentation of the collectionΆs discoveries as in the appointment of its educational character.

The collection includes archaeological discoveries from all the extent of the ancient municipality which cover a large time period from the pre-history until the Roman and Byzantine years.

The exhibits, stone and metallic objects, statuettes, tools, oil lamps, currencies and pots as well as tombstones from tombs, sanctuaries, residences, workshops, warehouses, reservoirs, roads and pipes.

In the walls of rooms rich supervisory material informs the visitor for the geography and history of Acharnes and of neighbouring municipalities of city, for the works of infrastructure in ancient Acharnes, the kinds of residences, the customs of burial and the daily life of residents.

The objects of Museum are classified in thirteen showcases, one for the pre-historic, three for the geometric, seven for the archaic, classic and Hellenistic and a last one for the Roman and Byzantine discoveries.

Educational Programme

The Municipality of Acharnes in 2009-2010 realises an educational programme in the Archaeological Collection of Acharnes, turning the childrenΆs visit in the Museum from an educational walk into a prolific and pleasant educational adventure. The age of children to who the programme is mainly addressed is from ten to fifteen years old.

The instructive approach of showcases takes place with starting point specific objects each time in order the students to understand better each era but also the historical course of ancient Acharnes.

The children, with the application of modern museo-pedagogic principles such as the child central and experiential approach of utilitarian and artistic objects are led with a pleasant and comprehensible way to the discovery of magic of objects with theatrical games, conjectural creation and use of educational kits. The acquaintance with the collection takes place through thematic units such as “The child from his birth until the adultness”, “The public and private life”, and “The life of women” on the occasion of the objects themselves, their iconography and the portrait of Acharnes. The door of museum remains open for a lot of visits with different objective, it allows the research, the study, the collaboration and contributes to the configuration of a pleasant experience.
